  1. You should watch Night Flight. It is a very interesting story about a boy who is trying to come out to his friend that has chosen a way different path in life. The story is about 3 friends really, Yong-ju, Gi-woong and Gi-taek, all who seem to have trouble in one way or another once they make it into high school. Yong-ju isn't really a trouble maker, but he's not exactly afraid of it either. Gi-taek is the type of guy that will do things to fit in. Gi-woong is a gang leader, now almost completely estranged from his 2 former best friends. A lot of things happen in this movie that I was very impressed by, nothing in this movie seems forced or out of character, or like the actors are trying to hard. It's almost like watching how something in this nature may really occur in real life, no unnecessary bl drama or cringe worthy cliche "yaoi" moments. It's subtle and natural, and I'd watch this a million times over again, mainly because Kwak Si-yang (who plays Yong-ju) is so perfect in this role, not to mention how handsome he is. I can't say I'm a good judge of these things as I'm not a native Korean and I'm not exactly following the hollywood scene in south Korea, but this movie is very touching. Please consider giving it a watch, you won't regret it. There is some action in this movie, and a perfectly placed scene with a kiss and tears that threw me into a void I didn't know existed after I saw Yong-ju's expression. That scene will probably be in my dreams for years to come... I'm sorry, I moved. Please watch!

  2. I have also seen and recommend The King and the Clown. It's set during the 15th century, and revolves around the adventures of two entertainers, street clowns, who perform and earn money for their manager at first. Jangsaeng and Gong-gil flee after Jangsaeng becomes tired of their manager pimping Gong-gil to rich clientele and kills him. They form a new group in Seoul, this time creating plays that feature the King and his concubine. The court nor the king appreciate this shit, so they punish the performers, but end up striking a deal with them. To avoid execution, they have to make the king laugh.

Not to spoil any fun, but the story is quite intricate, and you might need a little knowledge of how Korean empire works. Overall, the acting is immersive, and you really begin to empathise with a lot of what's going on with the characters, and not just the clowns. Being a king, being in a king's court, being a politician to that matter can be a scary and risky undertaking when you're dealing with the embroidered corruptness pulling at the strings of every seam around you. You can imagine what lengths people go to for power... It's a powerful movie, definitely a pair of clowns you'll need to take quite seriously.

To add a little more to the storyline, the king does let them join his court, but there something underlining his intentions, and it has to do with the captivating Gong-gil. These performers have a ton of influence on this particular court, and it's interesting to watch how the story shifts from what you think might happen to what suddenly may happen! Not sure if that makes sense, but I mean it's not as predictable as you may initially want to think. Another great Korean movie, with wonderful actors, and beautiful visuals.
